These are instructions on how to power on, wake, lock, unlock, and power off your Apple Watch.
Power On
If the Apple Watch is off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears then wait for the device to boot.
Wake
To wake your Apple Watch, just raise your wrist or tap the display. The watch automatically goes to sleep when you lower your wrist. You can also wake up the watch by pressing the Digital Crown.
If the Apple Watch doesn’t wake when you raise your wrist, make sure you’ve selected the proper wrist and Digital Crown orientation. If you’re looking at the watch face, press the Digital Crown to get to the Home screen, then tap the Settings icon. Go to General then Orientation, and make sure Orientation is set to the wrist you wear Apple Watch on.
Notably, you can choose to wake to your last activity instead of the watch face. To return to the last app you used, open Settings, tap General then tap Activate on Wrist Raise. Make sure the Wrist Raise toggle is in the ON position, then scroll down and choose to Resume To the Last Used App.
Then next time you wake your device, you’ll be taken straight to the last app you had open instead of the watch face.
Lock
To lock your Apple Watch you will need to set a passcode using the iPhone. Tap to launch Apple Watch from your SpringBoard, then select the My Watch tab at the bottom left.
Tap to open Passcode then press the Turn Passcode On button.
You’ll be prompted to enter a new passcode on your Apple Watch and then confirm it.
You can now press and hold the side button on the Apple Watch to bring up a new ‘Lock Device’ slider. Dragging the slider to the right will manually lock the watch and you’ll be required to enter your passcode the next time you try to use the device.
You can also have the watch lock automatically when it’s taken off your wrist. On the iPhone return to the My Watch settings page by tapping the button at the top left. Select General then make sure the Wrist Detection toggle is in the ON position.
The next time you take off your Apple Watch you will be prompted to enter your passcode before it can be used.
Unlock With iPhone
To make a watch passcode more convenient, it’s possible to automatically unlock your Apple Watch from the iPhone. On the iPhone, return to the My Watch settings menu then tap Passcode. Tap to toggle the Unlock with iPhone switch to the ON position. You’ll be asked to confirm this setting change by entering your passcode on the Apple Watch.
Once enabled, the feature will automatically unlock your Apple Watch after you’ve unlocked the iPhone.
Power Off
To power off the Apple Watch, press and hold the side button until the power slider appears, then drag it to the right.
