Global pre-orders for the Apple Watch are expected to top 2.3 million units through May, according to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The Sport model is said to be by far the favorite, accounting for 85% of pre-orders. The Apple Watch is said to account for about 15% of pre-orders and the Edition less than 1%.

Production issues with the smartwatch apparently center around the display and the vibration unit that provides haptic feedback. The display is supplied by LG.

Although, 2.3 million units is significant company to sales of other smartwatches, Kuo says it is too earlier to determine if the device will be a success. Slice Intelligence estimates that Apple took more pre-orders on day one than all Android smartwatches sold in 2014.

Finally, rounding out the report, Kuo discusses the A9 processor. TSMC will apparently get 20% of orders for the chip that will power the next generation iPhone. Kuo says Apple is concerned about insufficient 14nm capacity at Samsung. Demand for the S6 and S6 Edge has reportedly been higher than expected and Samsung may have decided to dedicate some capacity to those devices.
