Following a leaked schematic allegedly for a NFC chip that will be used by the iPhone 6, it appears a location for the chip has been spotted on purported logic boards for both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.
MacRumors forum member chrmjenkins notes that the alleged NFP chip (PN65) measures 5mmx5mm with 32 terminals. After examining leaked photos of the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 logic boards, he believes he's determined a location for the chip.
The location on the board is a square patch that does not correspond to any component from the iPhone 5s logic board, indicating that it may indeed be for a new component such as an NFC chip. Existing components may of course see changes in shape between generations, but many of the current major components can be mapped reasonably well to locations on the iPhone 6 logic boards, leaving relatively few candidates for this new square patch.
While NFC has been rumored in the past and never come to fruition, this discovery lines up with a prediction from VentureBeat who claimed that Apple may be finally ready to embrace NFC making the iPhone 6 ready for mobile payments. They also said the chip used will reportedly come from NXP.
The VentureBeat report is just one of many that have predicted NFC for the next generation device.
We'll find out what Apple has in store soon. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
