Apple's A8 Processor to Remain Dual-Core, Top 2 GHz?

Apple's next generation processor rumored to power the iPhone 6 and future iOS devices will remain dual core, but feature clock speeds at 2GHz or more. The current iPhone 5s features an A7 processor that clocks at 1.3 Ghz, while the iPad Air's A7 is clocked at 1.4GHz.

The chip will obviously keep the the 64-bit architecture, but contrary to earlier reports, it will remain dual-core instead of the anticipated quad-core chip. According to Chinese media, the A8 will be manufactured using a 20nm process instead of a 28nm process. Previous reports have had the A8's clock-speed at 2.6GHz.

Back in February it was suggested that Apple would not integrate an LTE modem into the A8 processor and instead rely on Qualcomm's external chip. Integrating its own LTE modem would help Apple further optimize the chip for iOS.

TSMC and Samsung are reportedly the primary manufacturer of the new A8 Chip, and while many new smartphones are shipping with quad-core processors, Apple's ability to use custom-designed processors that are optimized for iOS may prove just as powerful.
