Apple was expected to bring sweeping changes to its iOS 8 Maps app, but surprsingly, nothing was announced at WWDC. A report today revealed just why we have yet to see transit directions and improved mapping data, as rumored.
However, it turns out that we could see Transit directions in Maps sooner than later, As Apple may have accidentally leaked a screenshot of the upcoming feature. One developer has spotted a slide in an Apple WWDC session video showing an iPad running Maps, but with a special Bus icon in the bottom center toolbar -- likely for Transit directions.
The screenshot, which can be seen above, shows an icon of a train or a bus at the bottom center of the screen, which presumably indicates transit directions. It comes from the session titled “Power, Performance and Diagnostics: What’s new in GCD and XPC,” and BGR was pointed to it by Jesper.
For Apple to include a such a slide with that feature suggests that perhaps transit directions were a last minute cut from iOS 8. The question remains as to whether or not we will have to wait until iOS 8.1 to see the feature.
Apple has already removed the session video and slides from the website that revealed the icon.
