Apple Leases Seven-Building Campus in Sunnyvale

Apple has agreed to lease a seven-building campus in Sunnyvale where it could place about 1,450 workers, reports Mercury News.

The deal is the latest sign of a remarkable burst of expansion by Apple. The tech company is busy leasing offices in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara at the same time it undertakes the construction of a massive 2.8 million-square-foot "spaceship" campus in Cupertino that could accommodate 14,200 workers.

The 290,000 sq ft complex at the corner of Central Expressway and North Wolfe Road is known as Sunnyvale Crossing. It was purchased by Lane Partners and renovated into a state of the art office center.

"Apple continues to grow, they are building e-commerce, support staff; they are adding new software and hardware products; they are hiring all sorts of high-level engineers," said Tim Bajarin, principal analyst with Campbell-based market researcher Creative Strategies. "This sort of expansion is more than justified."

Documents with the city of Sunnyvale list Apple as the tenant in one 69,000 sq ft building at 120 San Gabriel Drive but sources tell Mercury News that Apple plans to occupy the other six buildings as well. Building permits have been filed for interior improvements.

They are not expanding, at least this is not the reason they are leasing those building. They had to tear down some of their own buildings to build the "spaceship." As a result they had to move those folks somewhere in the meantime. This is all this is. Not saying they are not expanding, just this move is a result of relocating folks because of the scenario I just described.

Why would they do that for a spaceship campus? Employees make the products but being involved in the campus? I doubt your idea.

You both are wrong. They demolished HP's former campus.... Apple had no buildings there. This is most definitely expansion, also keep in mind that the existing Apple Campus at 1 Infinite loop is still in full operation.
