New photos, specs, and details on Amazon's 3D smartphone, rumored for release this summer, have been leaked by BGR.
The photos below show a prototype device covered by protective shell that hides the true design. The device has been in development at Amazon for a few years and aims to distinguish itself by focusing on Amazon products and by featuring a custom 3D interface unlike anything seen before on a smartphone.
The company is working on at two handsets. The second is an entry-level device with low-end specs and a competitive price. The higher-end model which will reportedly be release within the next few months, will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and have 2GB of RAM. As with Amazon's other hardware products, the smartphone will run a very customized version of Android. The phone's display is 4.7-inch in size and has a resolution of 720p.
The most interesting aspect of the new device is the 3D software interface. A total of six cameras are present on the device. The 13MP rear camera and a front-facing camera for video chats. The remaining four work with other sensors to facilitate the 3D effects. One camera is situated at each front corner of the device. Reportedly low-powered infrared cameras, they track the position of your face and eyes in relation to the screen. The software uses that data to make continual adjustments to the positioning of on-screen elements, resulting in a 3D experience without the need for glasses.
The 3D interface is used in several areas. On the lockscreen, special wallpapers with perspectives shift as the user tilts the phone. The 3D effect also applies to application icons and core interface elements. Several main apps also support it including the Maps application and Amazon's various stores. By shifting the position of the phone, you can see a 3D product image at different angles.
Amazon is working to get outside developers on board to create key third-party apps that take advantage of the 3D interface.
