Amazon is preparing to release a smartphone in the second half of 2014, according to WSJ sources.

The retailer has been demonstrating versions of the handset to developers in San Francisco and its hometown Seattle in recent weeks, these people said. People briefed on the company's plans have been told that Amazon aims to announce the phone by the end of June and begin shipping phones by the end of September, ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The company reportedly plans to distinguish its smartphone from competitors by offering a glasses-free 3D display. The device would utilize retina-tracking technology and four front-facing cameras to make images appear to be 3D.

A previous report detailed how this might work, "Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles... Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes"

The news of an Amazon smartphone comes just after the company announced Amazon Fire TV, a video streaming box that competes with the Apple TV.

Details on design and pricing are still unknown; however, you can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for any updates.
