Developers have begun testing the new push notification system in iPhone OS 3.0. MyAppleGuide has published a gallery of screenshots demonstrating how the system works; however, their server is down due to excessive CPU usage.

Each application will ask for permission to provide push notifications upon launch. Once authorized, you can customize the type of notifications you wish to receive: sounds, alerts, and/or badges.
