Microsoft will release a new version of Office for Mac before the end of the year, reports Computerwoche. The site spoke with Thorsten Hübschen who heads up Office in Germany.

MacWorld relays the German report:

At the Cebit trade fair in Hanover, Hübschen told Computerwoche that there are now development teams for each of the Office applications, which each produce versions of their product for different platforms. In addition to MacOS, other possible targets for the future may include tablets running iOS and Android. Microsoft gave a hint in this direction when it released an Android SDK at its SharePoint Conference 2014 in Las Vegas last week.

The currently available Office for Mac 2011 was released in 2010 and lags behind the Windows version. A planned version of Office:mac 2013 never appeared because Microsoft folded its Mac business unity into the business software unit in 2010 and then shut it down entirely.

Hübschen says there should be more news in Q2 and that Microsoft is already talking to large customers about the Mac package.

A representative for Microsoft confirmed to MacWorld that development of Office for Mac is ongoing. "The team is hard at work on the next version of Office for Mac," she said in an email. "While I don’t have details to share on timing, when it’s available, Office 365 subscribers will automatically get the next Office for Mac at no additional cost."
