Apple will reportedly release iOS 7.1 in mid-March alongside a new Mobile Device Management system, reports AppleInsider.
An unverified source tipped the site that Apple is working with some vendors and institutional clients to improve iOS managed deployment. Those features are expected to ship with iOS 7.1 "around March 15."
The source did provide some details on the new device management features.
Notably, Apple now has a live Volume Services site which offers the ability to "Automate MDM Enrollment" and "Buy Apps and Books in Volume". The web based service is said to be an improvement on the current Configurator utility.
A tentpole feature for the new MDM system will be over-the-air supervision of deployed iOS devices, which will allow institutions to easily monitor and protect large iOS device deployments, the person said. For example, a school administrator would be able to set and lock device profiles, data and other information without risking deletion by the student.
The March release date for iOS 7.1 coincides with recent reports from other sources. The most noticeable improvements are the new call screens and new power off slider.
