A new report says that Apple is targeting its initial sapphire production at the iWatch not the iPhone.
Chinese media sources MyDrivers and PCpop are citing 'Taiwan supply chain insiders' that say Apple has put a lot of effort into fitting the next iPhone with a sapphire screen and some beta units are already sporting the prototype display. However, it's believed that the screen won't make it to production this year.
The problem is not necessarily due to low yield (which still is a problem, at least until Apple’s Arizon plant will be fully operational), but mainly because fitting a sapphire screen on the next iPhone would make its price skyrocket.
The same sources say that Apple will succeed in releasing the rumored iWatch with a sapphire glass display. The watch is said to feature a 2-inch panel which will cost much less to produce.
