Samsung Attempts to Silence User Whose Galaxy S4 Caught Fire [Video]

Samsung is attempting to silence a user whose Galaxy S4 smartphone caught fire while charging. The device was put to charge on an official Samsung charger before its owner, Richard Wygand, went to sleep. He was woken up to the smell of burning electronics and subsequently discovered flames coming from the smartphone.

Wygand attempted to get it replaced by the company; however, Samsung requested video proof of his claim. He uploaded a video to YouTube showing the damage to the smartphone which can be seen below.

This video is proof the phone caught fire that Samsung was asking for. So far they have been jerking me around well here is a video proving my claim and a warning to Samsung S4 owners the claims are true they have been reading about.

Upon seeing the footage, Samsung legal sent him a letter indicating they would replace the phone with a 'similar model' if he promised to remove the video, never tell anyone what happened, and take no future action in regards to the matter. Understandably upset, Wygand posted another video detailing his frustrations with the company and its attempted coverup.

You can take a look at the video detailing the matter below. You can also read the full letter from Samsung outlining its demands for a replacement device.

Notably, in July we reported that a Samsung Galaxy S4 caught on fire and burned down an entire apartment in Hong Kong. According to the owner Du, the device was an official Samsung Galaxy S4 with no third party accessories or components.

If this would happen with an iPhone, I'm sure apple would replace it for the same exact model, maybe even one more expensive, and not refurbished

Of course you are lying through your teeth, but in case you are not, you have just committed a breach of contract.

Korean government and Japanese came to a similar agreement in 1965, it said "By this Agreement, problems in regard to property and claims between Japan and Korea has been settled completely and finally", but Korea is still claiming "Humanitarian Issues" are not been settled. As much as Koreans are concerned, there are no " full and final compromise, adjustment, and settlement of all claims". They know you can sue them for the same matter 40 years later even you sign the agreement. Doesn't make sense? Who said what Koreans do make sense.

hey bath I sense some jealousy from you as far as your previous (and probably current) phones, they are made by taiwanese and south korean children versus chinese. all of these devices (regardless of brand name) are called smartphones so start using yours which ever one it is and read, lookup or research something.

Hi, seems that samsung make irons. Not phones Ive just brought 1 s4. Last week . And it warms too much !!! I turned off several apps. And nothing changes The screen warms a lot, and the reverse , at the battery level Any body knows an app to determine if it's correct, or if my battery or cell have a failure? thank you

jesus! this is why sometimes not knowing is better than knowing. As a veteran electrical engineerer, this vid just makes me laugh. Samsung S4 uses Lithium-Ion battery, not the Li-Po battery. It wont explode from heat/fire.

odedoo1 - December 7, 2013 at 1:17pm
Well i also learned and no they don't explode but the heat can start a fire, go back to school.

So, about this video going around claiming Samsung is wanting this guy to sign all sorts of sketchy stuff to keep quiet about his Galaxy S4 catching on fire. 1) He's telling people to go to his Facebook page to read the letter, and 2) He's only posted text and still hasn't uploaded a PDF or photo proof. While it's very possible Samsung could be up to such questionable practices, one should put their pitchforks away until OP actually delivers

odedoo1 - December 7, 2013 at 9:38am
If Samsung reacted this way you already know that there were many others also by sending him the contract they know he is not lying because as i said it happened before. If u cant read between the lines its not our fault, go back to school.

Jab - December 7, 2013 at 12:20pm
????, yes i know the real problem. The reasons why i made a comment like that were because 1. You cant really tell if the letter the guy was holding is officially from Samsung. No logo, signatures, or anything. So why the hell should we believe someone that tells people a story without providing legit stuffs. 2. Look at all the comments below. People tend to bring this into sort of Apple vs Samsung all over again. And this was my reply to those kiddies without taking a side.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - December 7, 2013 at 2:40pm
Well the guy sounded serious and this video was made to samsung so it's possible he was holding the letter!
Tony
Tony - December 7, 2013 at 7:40am
This is nothing but bullshit, the company will never sent a letter without even a logo on the form his showing on the clip and his laughing this is bullshit. Another thing is, there is no way that apple will replace a burned device, I know cause I had 5 cases that people brought it in the apple store and said, it was a misuse of the user. Dont believe everything you hear, they just want to get reviews, I have seen letters from samsung and non of them are what is showing... BS!
odedoo1
odedoo1 - December 7, 2013 at 11:53am
I can find a Samsung logo on the net in a few seconds and so could he so because there is no logo that we can see it makes the letter more real then ever.

To be fair iPods also caught on fire but Apple never denied it or tried to cover it up.

I believe they were using third party chargers and not the official apple charging devices when that happened.

odedoo1 - December 7, 2013 at 2:21am
True, you are not wrong but that was with the iPhones, the iPods caught on fire in the kids back pocket one was on a class trip if i remember right.

Those were probably the old iPhones before the 4s.

I believe u meant iPods but if u didn't u might be right because today when an Apple device overheat there is a sensor that gives u a warning on the screen and turn the device off.
jex
jex - December 7, 2013 at 11:40am
It absolutely didn't have to be a 3rd party charger. My s4 constantly heats up when charging and I only use my original charger. So much that I won't charge it when I'm sleeping anymore. I actually bought another battery that I keep on hand as back up ever since I woke up with my hand burning from accidentally touching it while charging overnight in my bed. It was definitely a potentially bad situation. I believe his claim.

odedoo1 - December 7, 2013 at 12:24pm
I see it in my shop all the time a battery goes bad and heating up while charging also dies fast when using.
