The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the FBI has developed and acquired hacking tools that allow it to remotely activate the microphone of devices running Android.

The FBI develops some hacking tools internally and purchases others from the private sector. With such technology, the bureau can remotely activate the microphones in phones running Google Inc.'s Android software to record conversations, one former U.S. official said. It can do the same to microphones in laptops without the user knowing, the person said. Google declined to comment.

It's said that bureau typically uses hacking for cases that involve organized crime, child pornography, or counterterrorism. Apparently, it tries not to use these tools when investigating hackers for fear that they will discover and publicize the technique.
