A new report from DigiTimes suggests that Apple will release a slightly updated iPad mini this year but won't release a Retina display iPad mini until 2014.
According to the report, the Retina display iPad mini won't go into production until Q4 2013 which would indicate a 2014 release. The new iPad mini is also said to feature an improved chassis design that gives it an almost bezel free look.
While the new iPad mini may not be available during the year-end shopping season, Apple reportedly may first release a slightly updated version of the current iPad mini in the second half of 2013, which is expected to be lighter, thinner and equipped with improved specifications, the sources said. Additionally, the sources said that Apple's upcoming fifth-generation iPad is expected to use thin-film touch screen technology, which will be able to reduce the weight of the device by 20-30%. The device will also feature a slimmer bezel design to allow a bigger viewing area.
Apple will reported start production of the iPad 5 this month in small quantities. Volume shipments of 2-3 million units are expected in August and September. In October shipments are expected to increase another 25-30%.
