Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has released a new report that finds Apple iPhones hold their value better than Samsung Galaxy devices, reports AppleInsider.

The inaugural report shared with AppleInsider compared U.S. eBay auction prices for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II , a method that looks to determine the current consumer climate for Apple's handset.

The index is "a pulse on what consumers are willing to pay for unsubsidized phones in the US," said Munster. "The key takeaway from 8 weeks of data is that the iPhone is holding slightly more of its value compared to the top two Galaxy phones."

eBay auction prices were monitored since March 15 taking a weekly look at the last 50 phones sold to determine the "fair value" for each device.

Despite costing 46% more than the Galaxy S III, the iPhone 5 dropped 11.2% in value from $535 to $465 compared to 13.7% from $360 to $320 for the S III. The iPhone 4S lost 7% from $349 to $312, the iPhone 4 lost 8.8%, and the Galaxy Note II lost 15% going from $550 to $444.

"We believe that the iPhone aftermarket price should continue to decrease as we approach an iPhone 5S launch which we expect at the end of the month of September," said Munster.
