Mass production of a new Retina Display iPad mini will reportedly start in the June/July timeframe, reports NPD DisplaySearch. The device is expected to feature one of the highest tablet resolutions to date, according to a report relayed by CNET.

"We should see the start of mass production of the panels in June or July," said Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

LG Display is expected to a major supplier of display for the device as Apple moves further away from Samsung.

"Samsung is currently not in the iPad Mini and they won't be in the next generation. LGD is becoming a much bigger supplier than before," he said.

The new iPad mini is said to have a 2048x1536 7.9-inch display. That's about 324 pixels per inch. Compare that to the iPhone 5 with features a 326 ppi display.

"We're going to start to see a bunch of tablets [coming out] with a pixel density over 300. At a certain point it will be hard to discern that improved image quality," said Shim.

This report follows an earlier one from NPD that said Apple plans to release a new iPad mini in the second half of 2013 and another iPad mini model in early 2014.
