Apple has cut its orders for iPhone 5 components due to weaker than expected demand, according to the WSJ.

Apple's orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter, for example, have dropped to roughly half of what the company had previously planned to order, two of the people said. The Cupertino, Calif., company has also cut orders for components other than screens, according to one of the people.

Suppliers were apparently notified of the order reduction last month suggesting that sales of the iPhone 5 may not have been as strong as anticipated.

It's recently been suggested that Apple is working on a cheaper iPhone that would target emerging markets where the high-end device is difficult for many to afford.
