Apple Dropped Google Maps Over Voice Navigation

Apple decided to abandon its deal with Google for Maps over turn-by-turn voice navigation, reports AllThingsD.

Apple didn't like the clear advantage Android had when it came to directions and wanted to add the feature to iOS but Google wasn't willing to just hand it over. Google wanted in-app branding and Latitude but Apple declined.

"There were a number of issues inflaming negotiations, but voice navigation was the biggest," one source familiar with Apple and Google's negotiations told AllThingsD. "Ultimately, it was a deal-breaker."

When Apple announced Maps at WWDC in June Google already knew the deal was 'sticks and rags' at that point. However, Apple may have jumped the gun a little bit.

"Apple knew it had a lot of catching up to do in maps," a person briefed on Apple's strategy told AllThingsD. "But, given what's happened the past few days, I think they felt they were farther along than they actually are."

I don't know all the hype about Google map that prople keep talking about. It is nothing compare to other paid navigation map such as TomTom, Sygic, and the likes, which I have been using for voice navigation. People who mock voice navigation don't know what it's like to drive in the fog. The nice thing about iOS 6 maps is that it cover nearly 85 countries. Now I don't need to buy extra maps any more. Btw, Google voice navigation is not that geeat on my Android phones.

I actually like the new maps. I used to use MapQuest app before for voice navigation but now i use Maps and i haven't had any issues thus far.

What a great idea. Now apple definetely ahead. Lol. Tnhings are getting strange at Apple. That's why I'm buying a Lumia WP8.

I am actually pretty happy with my apple map app. I've had not a single problem at all. It takes me to where I need to go without getting lost. lol Everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but it's great here in Vegas.

But if apple make such a big deal of Siri and now maps then to sell it to the world it should bloody work. Ripped off with the 4s wont be buying the iPhone 5 tell both the above work in the UK. Also 4G is hit and miss in the UK so no point in upgrading to 5 when so much don't work.

Tomtom has to be the worst gps software here in Ireland I have ever seen! Why did you pick them, you could of asked someone like garmin, who use navteq maps, same as the military, no tele-atlas crap. It can't find my street, which was built over 15 years ago! Tomtom is ok when using main roads. go into the countryside or off the beaten track- no chance. I love apple to death, have nearly every gadget under the sun built by them, but the iOS6 map is complete bollocks!!!! Get rid off TomTom!!!!

theres no voice navigation for countries whos doesnt have siri.. Apple should keep both maps apps.

Maps works really well in the Chicagoland area. Voice navigation works beautifully in the Midwest on all our iPhone 5 and 4s.
