Apple's Solar Panel Farm is Close to Completion

Apple's Solar Panel Farm is Close to Completion

Posted September 14, 2012 at 8:57pm by iClarified
Apple is nearing completion of its solar farm in Maiden, North Carolina, reports GigaOm.

There's a lot more panels installed on the field now. When done this first solar farm will stretch across 100 acres and generate 20 MW. Apple is also building another 20 MW solar farm near by. The solar panels and trackers come from California's SunPower. SunPower makes higher efficiency solar panels, which are placed on trackers that follow the sun throughout the day.

Take a look at some photos below taken by WCNC-TV.

The area was mainly brush and small young trees. Also I read somewhere they are replanting several acres of trees.

+1I have never used it, but I work with a few people that have SGS II pneohs and their reception around work is almost nothing. Downloads would stop for so long they just fail out. From what I understand from friends that have it around her, you have to live in the right place and not be moving around throughout the day too much to have it be reliable. I'm not bagging in TMo, I'm just seeing what friends/coworkers are experiencing and deciding I'd rather have uninterrupted service for a little bit more money.

Ironic. They're saving the planet by wiping out trees and using the land for their solar panels (which could be used to plant more trees and give the planet some hope).

good thinking sir, but the number of trees that should have been there where all the panels are now seated will do too little to the environment. yes, you're right about the trees cut off, just the idea of cutting a single tree is not good, what more at this massive area. but looking at the bigger picture, the benefit of using solar panels in that scale will do good way much to the environment. it's beneficial in a much larger scale. the benefit cancels out the bad side of it in a landslide proportion.
