Microsoft to Sell Its Windows RT Surface Tablet for $199?

Posted August 15, 2012 at 1:08am by iClarified
Microsoft has not yet announced pricing for its upcoming Surface tablets; however, a new rumor suggests the Windows RT version could cost as little as $199.

According to an inside source, a session was held at Microsoft's recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If things go according to the plan detailed then, the Surface for Windows RT tablet will be launching October 26th -- no surprise there -- at a compelling price of $199.

Last month, Microsoft revealed that the Microsoft Surface will be released on October 26th in a Form 10-K filing with the SEC.

I agree with F1982. It might also be concerted effort between the 2 companies to sequester the world market to drive Google into oblivion, as Jobs would like. MS is very capable of designing good hardware for they know what it takes to make things work for them-their eco-system. They already have XBox, which leads all set-tops. All they need is a viable tablet to make a transition into post PC era. This time around, they are learning the hard lesson and starting from the dog house. So yes, the Surface will be priced competitively with iPad, not a give-away.

You're labeling xbox as 'good hardware'? They have by far the most RSOD's and require replacements.

$200 if it goes off for that price I'd be surprised. But it ain't going to happen but if it does I'll buy and give it a try ! Would love to see something compare to my iPad

It's complete speculation. It would make sense for them to price match the lowest prices iPad with the RT and the most expensive iPad with the Pro. That way people have a genuine choice to make when they go to buy an iPad and see a tablet with more functionality from Microsoft. Selling the surface too cheap would make it seem like a cheap product, it needs to be marketed as an advancement on the iPad. Android tablets only sell because they are cheap, not because they are as good as the iPad, surface has a genuine chance of changing that model.

Shit. Apple related or not. For $200 I'll buy one just to count how many bugs it has. Lol.

Geez I figured this thing would sell a few when they first announced it, but overall I didnt see it doing much market damage. If it is indeed sold at $199, I assume it's sold at a loss just to get it out cheap, it's going to huge competition to google tabs and the iPad. I have a new iPad so wasn't going to bite, but honestly at $199 I'd probably buy it to be honest.
