Next iPhone to Have 8-Pin Not 19-Pin Dock Connector, Bluetooth 4 Link

Next iPhone to Have 8-Pin Not 19-Pin Dock Connector, Bluetooth 4 Link

Posted August 1, 2012 at 2:13pm by iClarified
A new report from iLounge is claiming that the next iPhone will have an 8-pin dock connector rather than the 19-pin connector previously rumored.

According to two sources, Apple's new Dock Connector features only 8 pins, seemingly contradicting claims of "16-pin" and "19-pin" connectors. Although the original Dock Connector contained 30 pins, reports of 16- or 19-pin connectors seemed hard to square with the port's small size and Apple's actual need for additional pins beyond what USB/Micro-USB offer. No images or parts for the connector have leaked out, either. Both of our sources concur that there are eight pins in a line within the new Dock Connector, which may well receive a different name going forward.

One of their sources also claims that the new connector can be oriented in either direction similar to the MagSafe connector.

Apple is also said to be working on a new feature that would act as a bridge between Bluetooth 4 devices. This would allow you to view iMessages from your iPhone on your iPod nano, record iPod voice memos that could be shared to the iPhone, or even make iPhone calls from the iPad.

This report follows a previous one from the site offering new details about the release of the next iPhone and iPad mini.

Previous post was for audio. For charging how hard would it be for those Chinese to make a new cigarette lighter car adapter. Like seriously!

See what they did from MagSafe to MagSafe 2 with that adapter that allows you to use MagSafe on MagSafe 2? Well so why not? Apple may give the green light to change the size of the dock? We shall wait and see

Guys don't forget the FireWire to USB charging switch apple made a few years back. That left a lot of cars with iPod/iPhone integration (including my GL450) high and dry till Scosche started making adapters. So it's not too far fetched that apple might indeed change the connector on the iPhone 5.

I don't believe any of this. It would create to many compatability issues, and the newest ipad didn't have different connector? I love having a charger in every room of the house from my previous i devices. New connector would just be useless.

I ordered the Motorola Droid Multimedia Station on the Droid's relasee day because I thought it was a cool idea. I didn't see it in person until it was delivered to my door and the geek in me loves it! PROS: - Nice build quality - Non-skid base - Turns your Droid into an alarm clock and weather station - Sync your data via USB cable - Just plain cool looking CONS: - Will not work with cases - Somewhat expensive The box includes 4 items, the actual dock, a micro USB cable, an AC adapter, and a user guide. The dock itself is very well made and is quite hefty in weight. You won't be accidentally knocking this dock around from your desk especially since it also has a non-skid base. The dock has a micro USB port that you plug the cable into and then you plug the other end into the AC adapter. This of course, powers and charges your Droid, which is perfect for your nightstand. If you want to sync your Droid, just plug the micro USB cable into your PC. This will charge your Droid too, but at a much slower rate and only when your PC is powered on. When you dock the Droid in, the orientation changes automatically to landscape. You select what city you want your weather widget to display and boing, you have your multimedia station. The dock has magnets located in specific areas to activate this mode, which I just found can be activated by using an app called Dockrunner. It is available for download in the Marketplace. It's a little pricey for what it does but it is cool nonetheless. An audio out or built-in stereo speakers would've been cool but no biggie!

So I should sell my Bose dock radios, get a new BMW to connect to the car stereo, and start travelling with more cables for charging. That would be the real tradeoff... I think I will rush to get a 4s quickly, they seem to be out of their minds.. and the pictures of the supposedly new one just suck.. almost vintage, or just.. camouflaged !? But the compatibility with the accessories is an issue..

I heard they are getting ride of the connector all together. They are going to implement inductive charging. Lol. Well it's as true as this rumor.

It is about the right size for a micro HDMI connector. And HDMI will support ethernet (and soon USB) over the cable. That is 19 pins. Awesome but very unlikely, as would be a micro Thunderbolt connector with 20 pins. USB 3.0 at 5 pins plus shield for a total of 6 connections would be an easy choice. And able to deliver muxed AV over that as well. So USB 3.0 meets the needs, and if it is a micro style connector that is somehow micro-b usb 2.0 style compatible as well, meets the universal mobile device power supply requirements of the EU. So strong USB guess. And if it is USB 3 it doesn't need anything else.

I'd like to correct my "master". USB 3.0 is 9 plus shield to include the bidirectional hyper speed channels...

Apple WOULD NEVER EVER put an universal connector on an iPhone so you can use any compatible cable with it, or worst, all iphone accesories (like speakers) would be compatible with that connector!!

GadgetJen85:@reddnmilla I think it stacks up prtety good to the Optimus and Intercept if you're looking for a phone that does more but you don't care about all the apps and flashiness of Android. I really enjoyed this phone when I used it and if I wasn't a smartphone person I would have been 100% happy with it.

Thats not fair! What about my car radio that takes the old style pin connector?

What about my car that doesn't have any connector or Bluetooth? Hardware evolves, and the Dock Connector has stuck around longer than most (over a decade). Apple and 3rd parties will offer an adapter so you'll be fine anyway.

My In car system has an iPod connector. But supplies power as if Firewire. So you'll be getting an adapter. And I'll probably be adding another adapter to the stack!
