Apple Adds Unique Identifiers to In-App Purchases In Attempt to Thwart Hacker

Apple is adding a unique identifier to in-app purchases in an attempt to thwart a Russian hacker who has created a service that allows users to obtain in-app purchases for free, reports MacRumors.

One of the suggestions for a method by which Apple could improve the security of In App Purchasing was to include a unique identifier in validation receipts, and we've received word that developers are now seeing something along those lines coming from receipts issued by Apple since late yesterday. The receipts carry a new field called "unique_identifer" that appears to include the Unique Device Identifier (UDID) for the device making the In App Purchase.

Its unclear if Apple is looking to identify those sharing their receipts with the hacker to allow his service to function or whether its a broader step towards increased security.

Apple recently had his original servers taken down but new servers were quickly brought online.
