AT&T Set to Charge for FaceTime Over 3G?

AT&T appears set to charge for FaceTime over 3G suggests a screenshot from iOS 6 Beta 3, reports 9to5Mac. Apple announced earlier this year that iOS 6 would allow FaceTime calls over the cellular network; however, carriers looking to gouge their customers can choose to charge extra for the feature.

We attempted to bring up the same same error message when enabling the FaceTime over Cellular feature on a Verizon iPad WiFi + Cellular, but the feature enabled without an issue. AT&T charges for a separate plan to use Personal Hotspot on its network, and the carrier appears set to replicate that process with FaceTime over Cellular.

AT&T provided the following official statement on the matter:

"We're working closely with Apple on the new developer build of iOS6 and we'll share more information with our customers as it becomes available."

To replicate the message in iOS 6 beta 3 you need to restore your network settings.

Why would i pay for somthing i get for free now? Realistically though who really gets all that many facetimes?

iPhone 4S has no 4G capabilities either. The 4G is pure fake marketing... :(

Wow, I didn't expect this. The whole paying extra for tethering is already bad enough, but ok fine. This...is not. I've been with AT&T for 12 years and I have killer retention features plus a hefty discount every month. I've been using FaceTime over 3G/4G ever since the iPhone 4 and it has always worked great! Very consistent. I was glad to hear that I wouldn't have to jailbreak my next iPhone to be able to do FaceTime via Cellular, but maybe that's not in the cards yet.

He must have the minimal data plan. I'm on an unlimited data plan on my 4s & iPad3 both running iOS6 b3 and have yet to see this.

Reset your network settings and you'll see FaceTime over Cellular disabled. I just tried it and I have the so-called unlimited plan as well.

AT&T has gotten overly confident with their customers ever since they started selling iPhones. They want to charge for everything. I'm going to canceled my account with them once my contract is over. No need for them anymore, since Verizon's iPhone can be used on a gsm Network while traveling abroad.

They can't do that. If you already pay for a data plan, it would be completely illegal. They can't charge you twice for the same thing.
