If my house ever went on fire from an Apple device or if anyone's did they can hit apple with a large lawsuit!

If you read the original article, the screen is moving because it's a recording of a video monitor while the footage was being played back. Look at the time/date stamp, it doesn't move with the camera.

It's indeed a known battery issue, but it's not limited to older phones. While they rarely smoke, they DO explode. The problem is the overworked battery expands to twice its size, causing the tightly packed components to fly apart. While they'll replace a newish one, the wont the older ones. After all, the VALUE of an old phone may be $50, but it still costs the same to manufacture as a new one!

if this was a 3G or 3GS then I am not at all surprised, this happens when the battery life is expended and has been through to many cycles, apple knows of this issue and does nothing for the unfortunate customers that this happens to. Apple just simply says they need to buy a newer phone instead of offering at least a small deductible for a replacement, I mean reaslistically an iPhone 3G or 3GS only cost about $35 to manufacture, charging even $50 or $70 for a replacement would seem reasonable, but it is apple and all they care about is ripping off their customers in the least obvious way

A replacement 3G or 3GS for a battery being consumed is $79. You get a replacement phone at the battery replacement cost. I just had one replaced at that cost because my battery had been consumed. I didn't want to buy new as I am waiting for the new iPhone.

I do not think so. I have original iPhone, means more than 5 years old phone, with original battery. And it has had never happened even if the battery has almost died. :-) I just think that guy had an iPhone with replaced non-original battery from China. :-) and is it really iPhone? :D

The same thing has been reported from other sites, and Apple is aware of the problem. They also issue replacements in many, but not all cases. As the writer states, they don't for older model phones. However, it wasn't a problem on the older phones, as they components weren't so tightly packed as they are now.

Same thing happened to my friend a couple of weeks ago, but he had replaced the screen and left a tiny screw in the case which caused a short. It was pretty funny to watch him dance around while trying to pull a smoldering iPhone from his pocket.
