ICANN has announced the applicants for its new generic Top-Level Domain Program which will bring .anything domain name extensions.

ICANN developed the New generic Top-Level Domain Program to increase competition and choice by introducing new gTLDs into the Internet's addressing system. What is a gTLD? It is an Internet domain name extension such as the familiar .com, .net, or .org. There are 280 ccTLDs but only 22 "generics" in the domain name system right now, but that is all about to change.

The new gTLD application window opened on 12 January 2012 and closed on 30 May 2012.

Notably, Apple has applied for the .APPLE domain name extension but did not put forward an application for .APP which has 13 applicants.

Amazon appears to be the most aggressive applicant with the company applying for 76 domain name extensions including: .APP, .DEV, .CLOUD, .MOBILE, .SEARCH, .SHOP and many others.

ICANN will now begin the process of looking at these applications in batches of 500 which it estimates that it will take between nine and 12 months. If multiple companies want an extension, priority will be given to the one that is community based. The last resort is an auction.
