Scoot Airlines Cut Costs by Using iPads Instead of TVs

Scoot Airlines is now offering customers iPads after removing their old entertainment system which weighed nearly two tons.

This move has allowed the airline operator to cut 7% off the weight of the plane and increase seating by 40%. The savings will help Scoot cope with the 36% jump in fuel prices in recent years.

The company has decided to charge economy passengers S$22 ($17) a trip to rent the tablets, which are loaded with music, movies, games, shows and other apps. For business class users the iPads will be free. Scoot plans to have content accessible via a wireless system onboard the planes in the future.

The move was seen as a "very smart" one by regional head Corrine Png. The airline currently has four Boeing 777-200s, but plans to increase its fleet to as many as 14 777s by the middle of the decade.
