The WSJ is reporting that Apple has ordered screens that 'measure at least 4 inches diagonally' for its next generation iPhone.

Apple Inc., which is expected to launch its next-generation iPhone later this year, has ordered screens from its Asian suppliers that are bigger than the ones used in iPhones since they debuted in 2007, people familiar with the situation said. Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.

There have been many reports that Apple would move to a bigger screen. Some reports suggest Apple will reduce the bezel on each side of the phone to accommodate the larger screen. Other reports suggest Apple will make the new iPhone taller.

Taller makes no sense, unless current apps are updated, or there is a "black bar" at the tops/bottoms of the screen (ala viewing full screen videos on a widescreen tv). On the othe hand a taller phone and therefore screen would be fully adept to widescreen video.

I know this is all just speculation, but if Apple makes the phone taller, they better make it a little bit wider too.
