Samsung announced today the third generation GALAXY S, the GALAXY S III, a new smartphone that will rival the current and next generation iPhone.
"Designed for humans and inspired by nature, the GALAXY S III is a smartphone that recognizes your voice, understands your intention, and lets you share a moment instantly and easily."
The Samsung GALAXY S III features a large 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED display, an 8MP camera and a 1.9MP front camera, and runs Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Introducing Natural Interaction The GALAXY S III enhances the interaction experience between the device and user. Smart enough to detect your face, voice and motions, the GALAXY S III adapts to the individual user to provide a more convenient and natural experience. With the innovative 'Smart stay' feature, the GALAXY S III recognizes how you are using your phone – reading an e-book or browsing the web for instance – by having the front camera identify your eyes; the phone maintains a bright display for continued viewing pleasure.
The GALAXY S III features 'S Voice,' the advanced natural language user interface, to listen and respond to your words. In addition to allowing information search and basic device-user communication, S Voice presents powerful functions in regards to device control and commands. When your phone alarm goes off but you need a little extra rest, just tell the GALAXY S III "snooze." You can also use S Voice to play your favorite songs, turn the volume up or down, send text messages and emails, organize your schedules, or automatically launch the camera and capture a photo.
In addition to recognizing your face and voice, the GALAXY S III understands your motions to offer maximized usability. If you are messaging someone but decide to call them instead, simply lift your phone to your ear and 'Direct call' will dial their number. With 'Smart alert,' the GALAXY S III will also save you from trouble by catching any missed messages or calls; your phone will vibrate to notify missed statuses when picked up after being idle.
Easy and Instant Sharing The Samsung GALAXY S III is more than a personal device that can be enjoyed by one user - it wants you to share and experience smartphone benefits with family and friends, regardless of where you are. With the new 'S Beam', the GALAXY S III expands upon Android Beam, allowing a 1GB movie file to be shared within three minutes and a 10MB music file within two seconds by simply touching another GALAXY S III phone, even without a Wi-Fi or cellular signal. The 'Buddy photo share' function also allows photos to be easily and simultaneously shared with all your friends pictured in an image directly from the camera or the photo gallery.
With 'AllShare Cast', users can wirelessly connect their GALAXY S III to their television to immediately transfer smartphone content onto a larger display. 'AllShare Play' can be also used to instantly share any forms of files between GALAXY S III and your tablet, PC, and televisions regardless of the distance between the devices. Under AllShare Play is also the 'Group Cast' feature that allows you to share your screen among multiple friends on the same Wi-Fi network; you can make comments and draw changes at the same time with your co-workers, witnessing real-time sharing on your individual device.
Human-centric Design with Uncompromised Performance The GALAXY S III not only presents features with enhanced usability, but also provides an ergonomic and comfortable experience through its human-centric design. Its comfortable grip, gentle curves, and organic form deliver a rich human-centric feel and design. Inspired by nature, its design concept is the flow and movement of nature. The elements of wind, water and light are all evoked in the physical construct of the GALAXY S III. In its essence, the minimal organic design identity is reflected in the smooth and non-linear lines of the device. Available in Pebble Blue and Marble White at launch, Samsung will introduce a variety of additional color options.
With a 4.8" HD Super AMOLED display, the GALAXY S III offers a large and vivid viewing experience. Samsung Mobile's heritage Super AMOLED display even enhances to HD and 16:9 wider viewing angles. To ensure faster content sharing and connectivity, the GALAXY S III offers Wi-Fi Channel Bonding which doubles the Wi-Fi bandwidth.
The GALAXY S III also sports a range of additional features that boost performance and the overall user experience in entirely new ways. It introduces 'Pop up play,' a feature that allows you to play a video anywhere on your screen while simultaneously running other tasks, eliminating the need to close and restart videos when checking new emails or surfing the Web. Its 8MP camera features a zero-lag shutter speed that lets you capture moving objects easily without delay – the image you see is the picture you take. With the 'Burst shot' function that instantly captures twenty continuous shots, and the 'Best photo' feature that selects the best of eight photographs for you, the GALAXY S III ensures users a more enhanced and memorable camera experience. HD video can be recorded even with the 1.9MP front-facing camera, which you can use to capture a video of yourself. Improved backside illumination further helps to eliminate blur in photos that result from shaking, even under low lights.
Mobile payment is also accessible with the device through advanced Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The gaming experience is enhanced through 'Game Hub,' providing access to numerous social games, while Video Hub brings users high quality TV and movies. Furthermore, Samsung Music Hub will offer a personal music streaming service. Game Hub, Video Hub and Music Hub will be introduced in select countries initially and soon rolled out to global markets.
---
The Samsung GALAXY S III will be available from the end of May in Europe before rolling out to other markets globally.

The hardware specs sound good but for the biggest down side is and will alwas be the size. It is to big! I want a phone to my ear and not a cutting board. Should the iPhone become that big I would not buy it. This size is no good to use and why does someone think the phone has to be that big.
Agreed.
If the nex iPhone can squeeze a slightly larger screen into the same sized case then great, but I don't want some hulking great behemoth.
That's what my iPad is for.
WHAT A SHOCK for the mobile world (especially for the loyal Android/ Samsung fans, this must be a REALLY HARD smack in the face). It's the FIRST TIME in my life I see a 'flagship' model of a company (a milestone for Samsung) which they have succeeded into making it look like those low-entry, low-budget, 100$ smartphones!!! Wow, what a MAJOR turn-off for all of those that had been waiting patiently for the 'bad ass' of the mobile market, only to receive the Quasimodo of the smartphones!!!...
I own both the devices !! I know about both OS well !! & you know where the drop down notification & cloud feature came from !! android already had those before iOS 5 !!
Funny that AMERICAN auto makers are still getting their asses kicked by all foreing car maker, from luxury like lexus, audi, bmw, infinity all the way down to the cheapest cars like hyundai and KIA.....lame.....
Well this is what happens when samsung try to make their own design ....it comes out ugly I have to admit there are some good features but it's ugly The next iPhone will definately beat this
The "GALAXY S V" will be out before the iphone5.
Just think of the money Samsung spends having multiple phones that they release during a single version of the iPhone.
Nothing new they just trying to catch up with the iPhone if u have a 4s jailbroken you can do that an more there are thousand of tweak that do that an more good luck with your "new product"
I agree that samsung designed this ugly !! But Jailbreaking doesnt add any great tweaks.
I own both devices, jailbreaking brings options that android have without jailbreaking & ROoted android device can do much better than all other mobiles more like a PC !!
iPhone is not a bad phone but it needs a lot of improvement in OS (not in stability &experience but in features) & Hardware (not Processors but RAM & glass casing )
it doesn't has good social integration
no mass storage mode
no way to play unconverted videos
no way to add music to phone on the go from internet (but iTunes is best for managing music)
cant drop the phone accidentally
In android you can convert videos to mp3 & other formats
No way to control phone from PC (in android you can do it evenvia browser with airdroid i can control & send texts my SII with my iPad2)
camera has less options
No way to take single app backup
No way to download from Internet with safari
No way to share via bluetooth (whats the use of having Bluetooth 4.0 or 4000 when you have no use of it)
In short iPhone is an like device owned by apple & steve jobs. you can use it but you cant enjoy your freedom !!
you are now without flash because steve doesn't like flash.
i have flash on my mobile so am browsing 100% of the internet !!
Also my device has speeds upto 21Mbps & also has mobile data counter to check how much i have downloaded !!
If you have a particular need to load from the gallery rather than from within the Facebook app itself there are plenty of photo gallery apps which will do that.
You can upload a pic directly from the camera using the Facebook app itself. You're obviously desperate to point out things that Andoid phones can do and iPhones can't so yes I'll grant you the Bluetooth file transfer (though I'm sure there are apps for doing it between iOS devices). There are many other ways to transfer a file from iPhones to other phones though.
I never said there was nothing though. I just pointed out that most of the things you suggested can be done with iPhones.
For what it's worth though I do thing Apple missed a trick when they integrated Twitter into iOS but not Facebook.
My Galaxy SII without apps can do a lot more than iPhone without any third party apps !!
Tell me what all you can do without installing any softwares & what all things you can do with just plain OS ??
you can install some socialnetworking apps like facebook if you are too cornered !!
remember there is no twitter integration without twitter app !!
i own an iPad2 the best tablet in world (regret ipad3 it sucks) so i know abt iOS too !!
k let me say!!
with stock apps I can Stream audio to any DLNE device, download via browser, watch flash videos on Internet, play unconverted HD videos of mostly all mainstream video formats, hear to FM, share pics to Picasa
Why are you so obsessed with "stock apps"? I prefer not to have my phone bloated with loads of apps most of which I'll never use (like my wife's Android phone is). One useless app (Stocks) is enough for me. I'll install the stuff I actually want and leave off the stuff I don't.
All of those things can be done on an iPhone except possibly the particular type of music streaming device you mentioned.
Agree.. It looks like a cheap cellphone that you would throw away after a year not something with "horsepower" For a start the camera on the back should be flush with case.
