Voice Reader Text to Speech Updates

Linguatec Language Technologies has announced Voice Reader Text to Speech 2.4 for iOS, an update to their Productivity app that reads text and PDF files or manually entered text aloud in any one of 21 major languages. The app features professional quality voice output with 32 voices, 20 female and 12 male speakers. The current update adds support for text in PDF files obtained through Dropbox, Mail, Safari, etc. Voice Reader is ideal for listening to any text or PDF, for foreign language study and creating custom audio books.

It is clear that reading, particularly on the iPhone or iPod is tedious. Listening is much easier. Users can listen to presentations, documents, speeches, and notes, which is particularly valuable for written material that will be presented orally. Many students find that hearing the material that they are studying for an upcoming exam helps them retain what they have read. Text of any length can be dubbed into an audio book, so that it becomes practical and convenient to listen to a novel during workouts and commutes, rather than devote time especially to reading it.

Voice Reader supports all text that has been typed into the editor, and copy & paste text from the Internet, Mail, Dropbox, etc. In addition, the app allows the exchange of documents (iDocument Interaction) between apps for text files (Unicode) and PDFs. Finally, users can put text files, which are saved on the PC or Mac as .txt files (Unicode) or PDF, into Voice Reader via iTunes and have them read aloud. Thanks to the Multitasking-Function, Voice Reader runs in the background while the user can look at photos or take notes.

Any voice can be downloaded (optional, in-app purchase) for completely self-contained, offline operation. With back-end TTS synthesis performed locally on the iOS device there is no longer a 2,000-character limit, necessary for manageable online operation. Advanced options, such as reading out a text sentence by sentence, skipping back and forth in the text from one sentence to another, or selecting sentences while reading, are only available when using offline voices.
