In a strange move, AT&T has increased the price of the iPhone 3GS to $0.99, reports MacRumors. The device was previous offered for free and is still free if purchased through Apple.
It's unclear why AT&T has started charging such as small amount for the device; however, one MacRumors forum member suggests that it may be a fraud prevention technique.
"I work at AT&T, this is being done to help prevent fraud as the 99 cents cannot be billed to your bill. It must be charged to a credit or bank issued debt card. Fraudsters are using stolen identities to steal these handsets ... been an issue since they went free."
