Sony Considers Launching Internet-Based Alternative to Cable TV

Sony is considering launching an Internet-based alternative to Cable TV, according to a WSJ report.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment company has approached several big media companies to negotiate the rights to offer their TV channels over the Web in the U.S., the people said. Sony is proposing to beam the channels over Internet connections to Sony-made devices, including PlayStation gaming consoles, TV sets and Blu-ray players, the people said.

Recently, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said, "There's a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set." The CEO also added that he has "no doubt" that Steve Jobs was working on a television set as Walter Isaacson revealed in his biography.

The Journal says that Sony doesn't want to recreate the same bundles Cable TV offers and might may with smaller niche channels that are having trouble getting fees from cable operators.
