Further 'iPhone 5' Case Analysis Suggests 4-inch Screen

Detailed measurements of the purported iPhone 5 cases being sold online suggests that the new device will have a 4-inch screen.

Yesterday, a gallery of photos comparing the iPhone 4 with supposed iPhone 5 cases showed that the upcoming device could be significantly thinner and wider. Now MacRumors, has used measurements to extrapolate a 4-inch screen side from the same case design.

The iPhone 4's 3.5" screen measures approximately 1.95" in width within a total device width of 2.31", leaving approximately 0.36" for margins/bezel. Assuming a comparable margin on the iPhone 5, the device's display would be approximately 2.24" wide, making the display approximately 4" on the diagonal. It seems unlikely that Apple would make the margins of the iPhone 5 screen larger than on the iPhone 4, so if this does represent the final case design, the iPhone 5's screen would have to be at least 4". Of course, this contradicts a recent report from DigiTimes claiming that the iPhone 5's screen would be between 3.5"-3.7".

Am I the only one who thinks the current screen size is perfect for the iPhone? My iPhone 4 fits perfectly in my hand and I use it without a case. With a case the phone feels too big. A bigger screen would mean a bigger phone........and with a case on it the phone would be bigger still. For me, all this talk about 4+ inch screens is over-kill. I personally think the HTC monster phones and other like them (phones with 4 in. or more screens) are ugly and uncomfortable to hold. It's ironic how mobile phone companies spent years and millions of $$$$ to shrink the size of cell phones ever since their appearance in the 80s and now they're spending millions to make them large again. Personally, if I need a mobile device with a larger screen, I'll get a tablet. Just my $.02.

agree about size! why oh why they think that big freakin screen is good for mobile?! tried to use htc desire hd with that 4"screen (i think) - sucks! feels kinda ipad to my ear! :D iphone 4 is just about right!

I agree. I think the only reason other phones went bigger was to compete with the iPhone. I think that manufacturers could compete anywhere else but screen size. The funny thing is that even though HTC, Samsung etc. went bigger the resolution hasn't changed (400X800)

I think the reason why apple making a large screen is for entertainment purposes liike watching movies,playing games..and also making it comfortable navigation with other people with bigger hands, 4" is still perfect they just raise the screen size by minimizing the bezel but it doesnt say that it will increase the phone width, apple said once that they will make the iphone 5 with the same size of iphone 4 with larger screen thus the solution is expanding the bezel,if that were to hapen then you dont have to worry about the size.

And that's what brings them all down.. My brothers have the Samsung Galaxy S2 and I absolutely love the screen size but the resolution makes most things kinda "blurry" for me.. Maybe I'm too used to the Retina display but it reall looked terrible.. A 4" Retina display would be a wet dren!!!

I remember 2 years ago when people were speculating on the 3rd generation iPod touch and cases were being shown to have a camera hole on the back of them. Heck they were some cases that were released with the camera hole cut out and what happened well they iPod was released but without a camera. Point of my comment I don't believe it till I see it. In case of the iPod touch apple didn't release it with a camera till a year later.

you never know! talking about ipod touch 3rd gen - i had camera for 3rd gen ipod touch - same flex as now for volume and hold button just with additional "branch" with camera soldered on top - so there was very good possibility that touch would have camera!

I hope it does have MORE than a 4 inch screen. The 3.5-3.7 inch screen got boring and old. Apple needs to make a change! :D

I've seen htc Titan with 4.7"! insane like samsung Note 5.3" dell streak esque dinner plate..
