An update of HistoryTools is now available from the iTunes Store. The dramatic world events of the past six months have been added to the expanded database which includes historical and cultural events, holidays, feast days and births and deaths of the most famous people in history going back to the pre-Christian era. The App has had 40,000 downloads to date.

HistoryTools 1.5.3 helps kick-start ideas for writers and is a godsend to journalists, speechwriters, copywriters, and PR professionals looking for an interesting opening for an article or speech. The programme is always online without a Wi-Fi or GPS connection enabling students to have a portable source of facts and factoids to knock their teacher's socks off. A number of newspapers around the world use this resource for their Today in History sections.

The App is fully searchable by names, phrases, dates or particular years. One can, for instance, discover dozens of major accomplishments of women simply by doing a Word Search on 'first woman.' Enter 'Italy' and 53 events in that country's history will pop up. One can view all events that happened in 1785 by simply entering that year (or any other) in the Year Search field, and any day of the year can be accessed by touching the calendar.

The App can also be used as a diary to record one's own events and important dates such as family birthdays, anniversaries or events in history of special interest to the user.

Created and kept up-to-date by Larry Belling, an American writer based in London, HistoryTools is based on his award-winning website at Dreamtools, which also includes a cultural history organized by decades, a slang thesaurus, a dictionary of cliches and catch phrases, a huge collection of lists of people, places and things, an anthology of humorous quotations, and an assortment of classic internet humor articles. The App has been built by a team including Chris Baxter and Lee Sommerville of Engine Room Apps, Leeds, England. The Dreamtools website was designed by Tim Longhurst of Vakart.
