AT&T Says T-Mobile Deal Will Improve iPhone Service

Posted March 30, 2011 at 4:55pm by iClarified
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson says the AT&T/T-Mobile deal will boost network capacity and improve service for devices such as Apple's iPhone, according to Bloomberg.

The acquisition would improve capacity on AT&T's wireless network by about 30 percent in some of the largest U.S. cities, Stephenson said today at an event at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. It could also reduce charges for overseas roaming, he said.

"This transaction is very instrumental" in improving network service, said Stephenson at the event. "Virtually on the day you close the deal, getting a 30 percent lift in capacity in New York City: that’s a significant improvement in call quality and data throughput."

On March 20th AT&T announced its plan to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a cash-and-stock transaction currently valued at approximately $39 billion. The deal must be approved by government regulators before it can be finalized.

Does anyone believe AT&T would say different? The marketing hype has started. To the proponents: If it sounds too good to be true ..........

Wrong-o. This will not improve service. This just gobbles up the only GSM competitor in the US. Watch out on the rates! This is BAD for everyone but AT&T. Maybe they won't be so obsessed now with shutting down the dev team's unlocks - small silver lining maybe? Provided of course that you're willing to lay down the "silver" to use your GSM iPhone in the US. I'm now waiting for the Antitrust Breakup of AT&T - 21st century edition!

How will this boost AT&Ts coverage? People who use jailbroke iPhones on T- Mobile say they cant use T-Mobiles 3G service.

Changing the base station radios on the acquired T-Mobile towers isn't difficult. On recent equipment, it can even be done in software alone. Otherwise, it's still an easy task compared with installing towers. Towers require a lot of time to acquire the rights, usually accompanied by people trying to keep the tower out of their neighborhood. This is the main impediment AT&T has faced so far in improving quality in dense urban areas and getting already-built towers from T-Mobile would therefore be a big help.
