AT&T Customers Can Activate Personal Hotspot on the Fly

Posted March 7, 2011 at 12:16pm by iClarified
AT&T customers will be able to activate the iOS Personal Hotspot feature on the fly, according to a MacWorld report.

Customers will be able to use the MyAT&T app on their devices to tap into their account and update it with the new hotspot feature. An AT&T representative told MacWorld, "Customers can select and migrate between data plans without penalty or contract implications."

However, there is one caveat. Users who have clung to the unlimited data plan would be required to drop it and choose the DataPro 4GB/$45 data tethering plan in order to take advantage of the iOS 4.3 hotspot feature. While the hotspot tethering can be dropped, users would then have to choose the 2GB or 200MB data plans, and will not be able to revert to the unlimited data plan.

This is good news for those who don't want the hotspot functionality on a daily basis and might only need to make use of it in emergencies.

In Canada, Rogers is allowing personal hotspot for free with no additional charges to start immediately. I have the 4.3 GM version and hotspot was activated no issues. I also used mywi. All we need is the jailbreak and unlock (which is suspect will be out soon after the official release).

It just amazes me that they get you guys to sign long 2 year contracts, give you locked iphones so you are tied to them for 2 years (unless you jailbreak and unlock by ultrasnow). Now this tethering hotspot thing. Surely they should offer this as a value added free service to all the loyal customers who have been forced to sign 2 year contracts or entice all the NEW users who will all sign 2 years contracts on going to AT&T! This whole thing just sounds illegal really. How can it be legal to force people to sign a contract for 2 years just because they want to use an iPhone? On top of that, how can the phone be locked as well?

My son almost removed my unlimited feature playing with the apps and messed with the myAtt app!! Dear gawd... If they would not put me back I would let go of iPhone... Got me an android based phone and my iPhone 4 would've hit eBay. :))

I don't see why didn't add it to those with unlimited plan instead to drop down their plan. I'm good with "MyWifi" or can use "PDAnet" both work great without ANY changes to the plan.
