iFixit Verizon iPhone 4 Teardown Reveals GSM Compatible Chip

iFixit Verizon iPhone 4 Teardown Reveals GSM Compatible Chip

Posted February 7, 2011 at 4:26pm by iClarified
iFixit's teardown of the Verizon iPhone 4 has revealed a Qualcomm MDM6600 chip that supports HSPA+ and CDMA2000.

This is the same chipset as the Droid Pro world phone. It supports both GSM and CDMA—which means that Apple *could* have supported GSM!

iFixit also notes that the Vibrator is completely moved and redesigned. "Our tests show vibrator has quieter, softer feel, and makes a better sound when on a table."

We'll update this article with more findings once the teardown is complete.

Apple could use the Verizon iPhone to test this new chip and since the iPhone 5 will likely have the same antenna system they might not have to disclose it to the FCC for approval. For the iPhone 5 Apple will just add the sim slot and update the processor and graphics

This is *VERY* interesting. I'd be willing to bet the reason there isn't a singular phone model is that AT&T didn't want the CDMA technology in their phone, and not the other way round.... Keeps iPhones limited to GSM networks even if they are unlocked. I suspect since apple is the manufacturer and their exclusivity is up with AT&T, iPhone 5 will be a single model...

Could this dual CDMA/GSM chip be a preview of the next iPhone(5?) ?
