I am very grateful for all of Saurik's pioneering work in the jailbreak scene. However, Cydia has been a dog for quite a long time now in terms of performance. It takes for ever to load. For a while we had Rock and while I know not everyone liked it, I did and it took seconds to load for me. Choice is good and we're worse off without it whichever one you preferred.
Cydia takes long because it follows the APT standards. It's rock solid and safe. Rock was fast because it took shortcuts, which broke a lot of things (Anyone remember the Rock update that botched everyone's phones?). So yes Cydia is slower, but that's because it does the job right. I hope it stays like that forever.
With all do respect, I have had my share of issues with Cydia, some of them quite serious. I am not trying to start a fanboy flamewar over which is better - they both have strengths. I'm just noting that one worked better for some and the other better for some others. The lack of choice has left us worse off. That's all.
Worse off? There's nothing bad about it. I'd rather a stable entity that provides fair choice than an unstable store that demands it's installation if you want it's packages.
All of the choices are in the store. Multiple tethering, lock screen programs, themes, tools for every purpose etc. That's what is important. Rock kept all that separate and if you wanted it rock would install itself like a damn yahoo toolbar. We are better off this way.
@Madcow
I respectufully disagree. Your argument is analagous to saying that there should only be one kind of car based on the qualities you personally care about. Sure, it can go forward, backwards, make turns so I'm supposed to be satisfied with that. But maybe I prefer a something faster vs. something safer. All I'm saying is that I miss not having that option.
Again, my comment isn't about which one is better, it is the loss of choice that is the issue. Lack of competition kills innovation, period.
Also, maybe I'm missing something (entirely possible) but I'm pretty sure you have to install Cydia too if you want it's packages. What's more, it is default installed with every jailbreak where as Rock is not. Don't understand Rock is somehow a worse offender here.
Either way, to each his own - except now not everyone has their own anymore and are stuck with a single option. I don't see how that makes anyone, including Cydia users, better off.
