Google to Launch Music Download Store?

Google is in talks with music labels and is planning a download store and digital song locker, according to Reuters.

Their sources say Google Vice President of Engineering Andy Rubin has been in conversation with labels about what this Google music service would look like. Rubin reportedly wants the service up and running by Christmas.

While no deals have been signed yet, the labels are excited about another large scale competitor in the industry. Currently, Apple accounts for 70% of all digital music sales in the states.

"Finally here's an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform," said a label executive who asked not to be identified. "What you'll have is a very powerful player in the market that's good for the music business."
