Google Maps Brings Gemini AI to Navigation on Apple CarPlay [Video]

Google has brought Gemini to navigation in Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, letting drivers ask follow-up questions, find stops, and adjust a route through conversation.

To start, tap the Gemini icon on the right side of the Maps interface during navigation. The assistant can help find parking, answer questions about places, and report traffic disruptions by voice.

In Google's demonstration, a driver asks for the park overlooking Seattle's skyline and the Space Needle without knowing its name. Gemini identifies Kerry Park, then handles follow-up questions about whether it is a good time to visit and whether rain is expected. The driver finishes by asking to go there while avoiding tolls, and Maps starts the route.

The feature operates inside Google Maps rather than as a separate Gemini app or a replacement for Siri. It is distinct from the standalone voice-based AI apps Apple now allows in CarPlay.

It is also separate from Google's Personal Intelligence rollout for Android Auto, which began October 20 and can use connected Google apps such as Gmail, Calendar, and Photos to personalize responses. That feature is coming to cars with Google built-in in the coming months; Google has not announced it for CarPlay.
