Apple executives Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak have offered a deeper look at the company's philosophy on artificial intelligence, privacy, child safety, and product design in a new post-WWDC interview with Laurie Segall.
Speaking with Segall, Federighi and Joswiak emphasized that Apple is avoiding the push to develop AI simply to showcase the technology. Instead of creating systems designed for endless engagement or companionship, the company is prioritizing utility. The focus remains on streamlining daily tasks, matching the next generation of Apple Intelligence with practical features rather than chasing broader chatbot concepts seen elsewhere in the tech industry.
Federighi rejected the idea of Siri becoming a romantic partner or substitute for human connection. He said the assistant is designed to help users accomplish tasks and learn about the world, rather than encourage emotional attachment or prolonged engagement.
On privacy, the executives stressed that Apple Intelligence is designed so personal context remains under the user's control rather than becoming part of a company profile. They highlighted Apple's on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute architecture as key differentiators.
The executives also discussed the broader risks posed by scams and data brokers as AI makes impersonation and fraud more convincing. Federighi advised users to be skeptical of unsolicited calls, messages, and emails, especially as attackers gain access to more personal information through leaked databases and online tracking.
Child safety was another major focus of the conversation. Federighi said Apple is reworking the child setup experience so parents can start with a highly restricted iPhone that only allows approved communication and selected features, alongside expanded Screen Time controls, then gradually expand access as appropriate for their child and family.
The executives also touched on the design changes arriving across Apple's platforms. Joswiak highlighted how deeply the community cares about subtle visual updates, noting that developers cheered for the changed curve of the corners on macOS windows during the keynote. He attributed that reaction to Apple's willingness to sweat small details and continuously iterate on complex design challenges to ensure a polished user experience.
Reflecting on his 40 years at Apple, Joswiak said the company's focus remains on creating the best possible products and experiences for users, a product-first philosophy he traced back to Steve Jobs' return in 1997.
