Skype has finally released a version of their iPhone application that supports calling over 3G; however, the company plans to charge you a monthly fee on top of what you are paying for your data plan.
With Skype on your iPhone or iPod touch you can call and instant message anyone else on Skype for free. You can also call landlines and mobiles and send SMS anywhere in the world, at great rates. Skype is free to download and easy to use.
What's New In This Version: Upgrades / improvements include: - Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply). - Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch. - Enhanced call quality indicator. - Improved start-up time. - Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.
You can download Skype from the App Store for free.
Does any1 know what wuld happen to an JB phone with 3G enabld Skype talk (of course via voipover 3G crack)after they start to charge for this service? if we don't upgrade to 2.0, wil Skype has any chance of charging for call via 3G?
They wouldn't have any way of knowing you're on 3G unless they tracked your iPhone's IP address and knew which blocks AT&T assign for their data/Internet. Otherwise, it's just an inbound (addressable) Skype service request.
Actually, I was only answering in terms of folks using the iPhone in the USA. After second thought, it would be nearly impossible for Skype to do anything on their end to try to detect if it were being used over 3G except a speed test of some sort. Short of that or disabling the earlier version, they really can't do anything...
Skype quality is spotty enough with wifi. Why would anyone torture themselves using 3G and pay extra on top of that? After using Skype for almost five years, the quality has gotten worst since they started charging fees.
This is already possible... on a jailbroken handset anyway...
1. go to cydia and add, http://cydia.xsellize.com to your sources
2. search the source for a app called My3G
3. in the app, choose Skype, and this will let you make calls on skype over 3G.
