O2 will allow customers to unlock their iPhones once Orange begins selling the iPhone on November 10th.
Matthew Key, head of O2, told Times Online, "Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator — though naturally we hope they won’t want to! "
When asked why O2's 3G network was struggling, Key made these comments.
"The O2 network has seen an 18-fold increase in data carried over the network in the last year and traffic continues to double every three months..."
..."We are investing more than £30 million to address capacity issues in London alone between now and Christmas and I’m confident that we’ll see much improved levels of service as a result."
Yes, but once the first sim is installed it becomes married to that iPhone using that specific network.
Only current workaround afterwards to an unlock is to jailbreak b4 doing so.
I called into an o2 shop today, and they told me that they would unlock any PAYG iphone if it was over 12 months old ??? but they would unlock any contract Iphone as soon as Orange started sellelling them ( next week)
Shouldn't it be the other way round given that you pay for the phone out right when you buy it on pay as you go in the first place, and so should be able to use it on any network as you please. Where s on a contract you are still paying for the phone, then you should not be able to unlock the phone.
That was my argument to the girl in the shop, but she reckons that they dont mind unlocking the contract ones, cos they will have to continue paying there contract, but with the PAYG ones, they will still get incom from top ups. Thats not true either cos, mines on Vodafone anyway
