These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone and iPod touch using BlackRa1n for Mac.

The BlackRa1n jailbreak will work with the 3.1.2 firmware but not the latest 3.1.3 firmware.

For those with the new iPod touch or newer iPhone 3GS, BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This means that once jailbroken you should not let your battery die. If it does die you will need to reconnect it to the computer and use BlackRa1n to boot it.

Ok lets begin...

Step One
Open your web browser of choice and navigate to http://www.blackra1n.com. Click the Apple logo at the bottom of the screen.

Greetings! Quick question that's plecoetmly off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My weblog looks weird when viewing from my apple iphone. I'm trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to correct this issue. If you have any recommendations, please share. Cheers!

I just bought a brand new Iphone 32gig 3GS and connected my device and ran blackra1n. Now the phone seems to still be in restore mode but it does not come on. I've tried to reboot the device by clicking home and power button but it doesn't seem to help. Screen does not come on. I've paid an astronomical price on getting this device without contract. Please help!!!

Could anyone help? I've tried to jailbreak using a Mac Powerbook G4 on 10.4.11 but when I click make it rain I do not get the image as it reboots. Instead a image becomes one of the white lead instructing to connect to iTunes. When I do this it tells me that there is an error and the phone needs to be restored. I've restored the phone and tried again. I've followed the above steps, tried with iTunes open and closed but still no image as it reboots. Am I missing something? Thank you Geohot for all the effort in making this!

i suggest not updating the carrier settings after the jailbreak. I launched itunes and it prompted me to update the carrier settings i did it and I couldn't connect to the network overseas anymore so i have to restore the software with itunes and the backup which took another hour or more.

Neither one - BlackRa1n or pwnage works for me. I have an legally bought (without the need to activate it) iPhone 3GS and Mac OSX 10.6 -Snow Leopard. With BlackRa1n, all seemed fine up to the moment it was supposed to reboot at last - it didn't and remained in the Recovery mode. With Pawnage I normally created the Jailbroken package (as many times before on OSX 10.5 and my old 3G iPhone), and when in recovery, I chose the customized package - everything seemed to be running just right until "Checking with software update server" or something like that appeared - and suddenly, it dropped back to recovery mode... Any ideas will be strongly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

I had no trouble, I updated the software in itunes... then it said my sim wasnt supported (no shocks there... 2 degrees in NZ - iPhone 3G !), then after it restored to 3.1.2 I opened Blakra1n with itunes still open (Mac 10.5.8 BTW) and clicked make it rain... what's the problem with everyone else.. mine worked perfectly !! Only thing is iTunes app doesnt work (I use MXTube whih is better) but the big problem is no MMS support :(

This is a good one for you all (hopefully someone can help me). So my iPhone has been dead for months. Bought it abroad unlocked and jailbroken. I installed 3.1 by accident directly from iTunes and it died (got nothing but the itunes icon and usb cable image). I used blackra1n and now I have an overpriced iPod Touch! It is better than nothing and I am very thankful but I cannot unlock the iPhone since the blackra1n icon does not appear on my desktop. Finally I get passed that screen and somethings work but I'd like my phone back. Does anyone know what I could do? Help will be greatly appreciated. (by the way, I have a mac and when I used blackra1n "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred OXE8000065") Thanks in advance!

Possible solution to GPS, WiFi, Youtube problems. What I did is, I put my original O2 SIM card and restored my iPhone 3GS with iTunes to factory settings. Then I jailbreaked wih BlackRa1n (still with O2 SIM) and unlocked with BlackSn0w. i checked to see if all is working - YES. After that i just replaced the SIM with "unsupported" SIM that I use. All is working: WiFi, GPS and Youtube without any problem. Hope this helps.

My brand new 3GS, 3.1.2, doesn't reboot and stays on recovery mode at the end of the process, even if blackra1n says that the jailbreak is done. Is it because of the new boot rom iBoot-359.3.2?

Same issue for me. Running Hong Kong version of the iPhone 3GS (official, factory unlocked). My iPhone wasn't booting properly, so I launched it in DFU mode, then started blackra1n. Blackrain says it worked properly, but has been stuck on the shutdown screen for 10 minutes now with the hourglass continuously spinning.

Try this, it might work for you, it did work for me and managed to JB the iPhone 3G with no problems. And after fiddling with it many times. Switch off your phone. Get iTunes started. Have black rain application running Plug in phone to PC Switch on phone While phone is booting up And just when you notice that itunes is dedecting your phone click on make it rain. Worked for me, can try it if you wanna

Lol you guys you do know a notepad file comes with the download. It might tell you what went wrong. Oh and it is the fastest jailbreak ever and you also have to have iTunes open when you do it
