Apple will take third-quarter delivery of newly developed 10-inch touchscreens from Taiwan, a source told Reuters Wednesday.
Taiwan touchscreen specialist Wintek already makes small screens for Apple iPhones, and has received orders for the larger ones that are roughly the same size as those used in mini PCs, said the source close to the Taiwan firm. He asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
He added that he did not know what the final product would be, or who would make it.
This news follows two recent reports that Apple is developing a NetBook to be released by the end of the year.
First the Commercial Times published an article saying that Wintek revealed that it is currently working with Apple to develop some new products, but it said it does not know what applications the new products are for. Wintek added that no shipment schedule has been worked out yet, but shipments are likely to begin in the second half of the year.
Then the Dow Jones NewsWire corroborated this report from a separate source saying, Apple is working with Taiwan's Wintek Corp, a contract manufacturer of small and medium displays, to make the touch-screen displays and Quanta Computer Inc, the world's largest notebook maker by revenue, to assemble the new netbooks, the second person said.
With three reputable sources now confirming this it seems as though a new Apple form factor is imminent.
