Eric Schmidt on Android vs. iOS: 'We're Winning That War Pretty Clearly Now'

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt confidently declares that Google is winning the war for mobile in an interview with Bloomberg.

Schmidt said Android is extending its lead over Apple at a rate that compares with Microsoft's domination of Apple in the 1990s.

Booming demand for Android-based smartphones is helping Google add share at the expense of other software providers, Schmidt said yesterday in an interview at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York. Android snared 72 percent of the market in the third quarter, while Apple had 14 percent, according to Gartner Inc. Customers are activating more than 1.3 million Android devices a day, Schmidt said.

“This is a huge platform change; this is of the scale of 20 years ago -- Microsoft versus Apple,” he said. “We’re winning that war pretty clearly now.”

Google feels that by giving away Android to hardware partners that it will drive traffic to its other services such as Search and Maps.

“The core strategy is to make a bigger pie,” he said. “We will end up with a not perfectly controlled and not perfectly managed bigger pie by virtue of open systems.”

Today Apple has 76% of smart phones profits according to Citi bank investment research, long term Apple will lead and Android will still be free but confusing to people that want there phone to be a tool not a tech gadget that needs Microsoft like spyware protection and multiple operating systems that may or may not work on your device. google may make a good operating system but gives it away to literally anyone and not everyone knows what to do with it.

Apple probably will adapt all of the bells and Whistles but things like that takes time to make sure they are stable enough to be able to push things like that out to us.

What you said is perfect!!! Android INFECTS everything, and a lot of them are for free!!! If you look by hardware model, Apple leads, and the Apple business is not only software, but hardware too. And Apple solution is the best!!!!

Well no kidding they have more units sold. Android is on every thing an half the devices can't even run it properly. Being open source is going to be androids downfall.

I have an iphone and a droid and ill tell you apps on the droid are mostly flaky and needs to be updated every other day. It cent be compared to the efficient apps on the IOS. They might be winning on sales because of too many dawn Android phones but it won't catch up on IOS apps. Even the best games and GPS apps, are only on IOS. There's no comparison. So Mr. Schmidt you're winning in your own mind.

I'd rather have Apple's profit.

Wasn't the iPhone (just one phone by itself) declared device of the year by TIME magazine? I mean ya google does good work with android and there are some pretty good android phone, but what android users and fanatics forget is that iOS only runs on one single phone. When you look at android sales charts and iOS sales charts the android portion is taking account of all total android based mobile devices sold while the iOS portion only refers to one single device (the iPhone) so looking at those charts logically even if androids portion says they sell more the iPhone by itself still dominates the charts since its one phone vs. every android phone

The point is that Google is winning. I think the headline made that clear. Pointing out the open source strategy does not counter that fact, it only points out how they are doing it. The market is being dominated by Google driven devices. If the competition was on hardware, Apple would be winning. But in the long run, the OS is probably going to be more important. We shall see.

Um dude open source doesn't mean anything, iOS and android can both be considered open source since it just refers to root file access. iOS may require jailbreaking for this but that makes no difference. But the point here is what sells more? And I think that if you thought logically, you would see that iOS sales is the more dominant of the two since its one phone against every android devices ( and don't worry. If it doesn't feel that way, just give it a sec, it'll sync in) :o

I think I understand what italia is talking about. Yes, it's iOS vs android. Or to be more precise, it's iOS (supported by a single manufacturer, which is none other than apple) against Android (supported by multi manufacturers who are due to fight against each other like bunches of mindless carnivores). In other words, Apple iOS alone is standing up against tons of Android's army. Which goes to emphasize the tremendous fight that iOS has in itself.
