Consumer Reports: Apple Maps vs. Google Maps Showdown

Consumer Reports: Apple Maps vs. Google Maps Showdown

Posted September 28, 2012 at 9:56pm by iClarified
Consumer Reports has posted a review of Apple Maps vs. Google Maps focused on how well each app helps you get from Point A to Point B.

Having put it through the paces we subject each portable navigator to in our test program, our original criticisms remain. But having more thoroughly tested Apple Maps alongside a Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Google Maps, we have a more favorable opinion--certainly more favorable than comments and articles that we've been reading online.

Our evaluations were performed in the greater New York City area using two phones per platform, each on a different carrier. We found that both Apple Maps and Google Maps route effectively, providing clear guidance and great points-of-interest integration. Overall, Apple impressed our staff with the graphic presentation for the interface, results, signage, and points of interest info. However, there is less customization throughout than Google--a mixed blessing when driving, where distractions can be dangerous. Google comes across as more business like and less fun.

Both apps found most locations they searched for; however, Apple Maps had a harder time finding locations by keyword rather than their exact name. Also, the test was performed in a populous city which would likely have more accurate mapping data.

You can read their full review of the two navigation solutions at the link below...

The YouTube on past iOS was garbage. It was trash. The one from the App Store is way better as far as fuctionality goes. You can watch the video as you're reading the comments or go to landscape to view video in full screen. But I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Don't we all have a choice to buy the product we like . I personally prefer the apple , simply because of its quality and always making improvement . As some one said apple is no different from other companies .It can make some small errors just like others. May be in future they will have U tube , or may give you the option of having it . Same with the other apps like google , etc .At the end of the day if you don't like apple you have other choices ! You can go and buy other phones. But APPLE WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST AND WILL DO WELL ..., You can say what you like , does it matter

Personally, I much prefer the Apple Maps to Googles. Apple Maps are fully integrated into iOS. I've covered some 3000 miles in scone the release of iOS 6 and haven't been steered wrong even once yet. For those who are having issues, like any new app they will get better with time. Lets face it Google, TomTom, Garmin, Navigon have all had issues with missing roads, sending people the wrong way down one way streets etc... that's why they all include some sort of feedback to allow the public to correct issues. Apple is no different. It's just that people expect Apple to get it right first time!

You are wrong. Try the Google map on Samsung Galaxy Nexus and you won't miss a turn. Google map in iOS 6.0 is nothing compare to the build-in map of Android.

Sadly, even after all Apple sues for, whether ridiculous or not people are still going to buy their products. Blind to the fact that all Apple sees in the faces of their loyal customers is $ signs, they still support them. There was a man who had a dog, the dog loved his owner so much he'd do anything for his master. The man however, was a cruel man who all he did was torture the dog and abused it and viewed it simply as a mutt. No matter how much abuse, the dog remained loyal and remained as his masters companion. The loyal dog represents the customer and the evil master represents Apple.

You're entitled to your opinion about which phone to buy, but you know NOTHING at all about dogs. I've dealt with plenty of abused animals, and most had little desire to return to an abusive owner, while the owners usually wanted them only to refute anyone's attitudes towards them. What you see is desperation, which is hardly appropriate in this case. Buying a $850 phone is hardly necessary for one's survival. People are loyal to Apple because they build quality products that are well designed, work well, and are updated frequently (how many screen sizes does Android currently support, despite the variety offered?). But don't worry, it's only a rhetorical question, as I've learned never to ask paid shills any questions I want an honest answer to.

Oh yea like any other company is different. Every single company is about the bottom dollar. They aren't different from each other. When google first came out they had their share of problems. I'm sure there is a reason why apple wanted to part from google 1. Competition 2. Google probably didn't want them to use their API's for turn by turn with out cluttering it with their ads. And probably many other reasons. Did apple jump the gun with maps… maybe. But no matter when they would have released it they would probably be behind google. Only time will tell. It might get better who knows. I personally like this more then the google maps app the was preinstall on the iPhone. It isn't as bad as everyone who's complaining it is. I mean people are even complaining about the maps icon. I mean come on really?!?

the youtube app sucks anyway. no to be too argumentative. If you're here I (probably wrongly) assume you jailbreak. Get Protube. I think it costs a buck or two or you can get it for free if you're "that way" and use xsellize source.

So far I like it better then google map. Voice navigation makes a big difference.I live in SEA.drove via bridges...no problem. clean interface.no transit options..oh well i do not use transit. if you live in city and you need transit map..not really useful in my opinion. I have all Iphones, IP5 so far the best one. I didn't expect lunch Rockest In the space from Iphone or hammer it down or shoot it with 50mm.Just Simple User Friendly Familiar Interface and quality and attention to details.Apple did deliver what I need. Can it be better...sure. I used tomtom before take them years to get it right + u have to pay extra for traffic..

Esthetics: Apple maps wins. Functionality: Apple maps is garbage, outright wrongly directs people to nowhere. Tested again today-no improvement. Note that Google maps is just embryonic when compared to other paid solutions such as TomTom, Garmin, and the likes. The best one hands down is WazeGPS, a free, community based solution. I do not know why Apple would not want to adopt Waze, help them with designing the attractive interface. The program is continously improved by donated hours from software engineers who have no time to polish the esthetics. This program is so cleverly written that it shames ALL other maps, free or purchased. People, try it out! No ads banner of any kind. It's also available on Android. Who cares about other gimmicks when nearly 100% of the times people would just want accurate voice guidance when driving at night.

Yep done in new york, great the phone is sold all over the world not just in the USA. Its not so bloody good else where is it missing out how towns. When all said and done its been put out to soon with little data and needs lots of user input to bring up to date. Not what you what to here when you paid for what you are told is the best iphone which is what was said about the 4s and in the U.K the 4s is a very costly iphone 4 mugged upgrading from ip4 as its not faster in real every day use and Siri dont work. You end up sent to search the web. Just like my ip4 just been robbed by apple

Yup. Very true. Use exact names and/or street address and Apple Maps works great.
