A group of hackers are working on a lead that might result in a useable jailbreak for the Apple TV 3, says James Abeler of FireCore.

There is a group of very bright and talented individuals working on a lead that could result in a usable jailbreak for the 3rd gen Apple TV. While there is no telling how long this process could take, we remain optimistic that a jailbreak for this device will be available in the future. For the record, no one at FireCore is involved in the jailbreak discovery process.

This follows a recent tweet from pod2g who said that he was not working on a jailbreak for the device and did not know of anyone who was.

While this news does offer some hope for Apple TV 3 owners; unfortunately, the latest device is viewed as the hardest of Apple's iOS devices to jailbreak since the attack surface is so small.

Just bought a 3rd Gen TV3 took it back today. Might as well use my Samsung 8000 for the same apps. Bought aTV2 on ebay I paid more but I dont care. I like to jailbreak my devices. I bet if there is a jailbreak for apple tv .Appple will sell over 10 million devices. They make harderbut people are no going to pay for a Safari to watch lions for $30 thats stupid..people want a freedom

of course firecore are saying that, they have been taking peoples cash on the promise of an ATV3 jailbreak for the best part of 6 months. and what do the genuine hackers feel about firecores commercial benefit from their hard work? I kinda think the missing ATV3 jailbreak answers that question ;)

I am really surprise that there is no jailbreak yet I know, I know it is the smallest Idevice so there is no much areas for exploits as some hackers had said in the pass But for apple, I am sure there will be so much benefit for the sale of the new apple tv if there is a new jailbreak. You can see on Craigslist that most people want the 2nd generation instead of the new 3rd gen So advice for apple, have someone release an exploit so jailbreak can be found And your sale for new apple tv will go up really fast.

Spot on - Apple never thanked JB-scene for brilliant ideas such as notification center (stolen from Intelliscr) and other innovations that came because of Cydia making it possible... As for iPhones and iPads we are talking of serious amount of devices sold partly because they are jail breakable - i wouldnt have bought my last two iphones if that wasnt the case. Also the AppleTV is the same, eventually new hacker will appear (Apple seeder) who will bring the JB to us - like you said, it would mean sales of AppleTV3 to rocket so they would be stupid not to seed exploit or jb sooner or later. Sooner please.

don't you think apple want to sell content to users via iTunes and rentals. They dont care about a few bucks in a one time purchase of an ATV3. I think you have missed the whole apple business model of a closed eco system! Why would they help destroy themselves?!

Actually JohnDD you're partly wrong. Notifications came from the notification center tweak on cydia Not intelliscreen and they hired the developer to integrate it into iOS. Also, you'd be surprised at the number of people who do Not jb their device or didn't know until after purchase. But still if you want more functionality then do NOT buy an appletv. There are better solutions out there.
