PCWorld has performed 3G and 4G speed tests of AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile at multiple locations in 13 major cities.
In this year's study, we took snapshot measurements of wireless service in 13 cities--Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.--across the country to get a real-time view of how the 3G-to-4G transition is progressing, and of which companies are currently delivering on the promised faster speeds.
Major Findings: ● AT&T's new LTE network turned in the fastest download speeds of any 4G service. Its 3G service was very competitive, too--and those two results help make a strong case for AT&T dual-mode 3G/4G phones.
● T-Mobile's HSPA+ 21 service won in the 3G bracket of our study, and the company's high-end HSPA+ 42 service competed reasonably well with other providers' 4G service. In addition, T-Mobile's service plans are more flexible and its prices are lower than those offered by competing carriers.
● Verizon makes 4G service available in many more locations than other providers do, and its 4G upload speeds are top-of-the-line, but its 4G download speeds don't match AT&T's. And Verizon's 3G speeds are not improving much, especially when compared to the competition.
● Sprint was consistently a laggard in our wireless speed derby. The company seems to have virtually stopped developing its existing 3G and 4G networks while looking for a way to make the transition from its outdated WiMax 4G technology to LTE.

I don't know where the Verizon network was tested, or with what gear, but here in Manhattan I have never gotten less than 10Mb/s and I typically get 25Mb/s. When I first got my Galaxy Nexus in January, I was getting over 40Mb/s. I travel on business and don't recall ever getting less than 10Mb/s anywhere in the country on Verizon 4G. I'm no vzw fanboy, but their service is infinitely better (and faster) than AT&T's everywhere I've been.
I thought the US would have faster speeds than that...I'm in Australia and get 7-8Mb/s on 3G (with full bars) and that's not even the fastest network. On the fastest network on 4G you can get 20Mb/s
We call it Turbo 3G. The new iPad doesn't even run on 4G anywhere in the world except US and Canada yet (maybe not literally only but pretty much).. We run 4G on different signal and therefor it's literally impossible to use 4G on iPad here. So the new iPad uses our 3G network and we get 25 Mb down on that. Our 4G is over 80 Mb down.
Those are some really good speeds, I wish we had those here in the U.S.
The problem is - Sweden is about the size of Los Angeles and it's easy to build a strong and fast network when the country is so small.
U.S. territory is about 22 times bigger than Sweden so it's takes a lot more effort and finances to roll-out new technology.
We only have 4G in some major cities and they plan on finishing it by the end of 2013.
