AT&T Will Start Unlocking Off Contract iPhones on Sunday, April 8th

Posted April 6, 2012 at 6:19pm by iClarified
AT&T has announced that it will unlock off contract iPhones starting on Sunday, April 8th, reports Engadget.

Here AT&T's statement:

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer's account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

This is excellent news for the many U.S. customers with locked iPhones. Perhaps emails like this to Tim Cook prompted the change in policy.

Got my iPhone 4 unlocked. Process was very simple. Called ATT - gave them my IMEI no - waited for the instructions in the email. Once I got that in a couple hours time, I plugged my phone in - started iTunes - Transfer purchases - Backup - Restore from Backup - and VOILA - your iPhone has been unlocked. I am currently on iOS 5.0.1, firmware 4.10.01.

I brought an I4 without contract in 2010. I just call att and Customer Service Guy told me that I have to call Apple Customer Service to get my iPhone unlock.. That's the normal procedure????

I called them a few minutes ago and, after telling my IMEI, was told to wait 5-7 days for the unlock instructions via email. Crossing fingers now.

The Standing Rule is the IEMI must belong to ATT and be 2 years or older. Same rules apple gives everyone

I don't think so. I think you have to be an existing iPhone user on AT

Im gonna laugh when its just like a temporary unlock or something and then all you guys update without baseband preservation and then they trick you and take back your unlock. Im still just gonna stick with the gevey way..

Called ATT few minutes ago, am with ATT, have ip4 and after verifying IMEI details, did not complete 2 yr contract period, hence was informed is NOT eligible to get the unlock code and should call back in end of June to get the unlock code.

What information did they ask for? One you unlock it, will it stay unlocked after installing future updates?
JP
JP - April 8, 2012 at 5:18pm
They wanted the IMEI and/or the phone number for that phone. Since I bought the phone off a family friend, I didn't have the number and the IMEI was enough.
Terry T

Called the number just a few minutes ago, and they asked for the IMEI number and asked me if I had service with AT & T, I said no, and when they asked me where I got the phone I told them ebay. AT & T then said that I wasn't eligible for the unlock, but they said they will send a request to Apple to get it unlock, and just like JP I gave them my number and email and they gave me a case number and said they'll get back to me in a week or ten days.

HE is correct those people say they will send you the information and unlock codes because most likely they don't have a clue how iphones are unlocked. So what you will receive is instructions on how to plug into Itunes and do a Sync. What i have cone in the past is do a Reset all Settings and let the phone boot too a USB iTunes prompt or use a cydia app to put your phone in Unactivated Mode. Then hook to iTunes and POP it will unlock. But he is correct they also offered to send me Unlock code I did not argue with them as they just don't know. So will wait a few days and see what they actually DO

It should a law suit to ATT earlier, how will be make sense... if somebody bought ATT Iphone , broke a contrat term and paid early termination......... but still hold a locked ATT phone ATT already calculated that early termination willl totaly cover brand new unlocked iphone cost price. ?

This is UNTRUE "AT&T Will Start Unlocking Off Contract iPhones on Sunday, April 8th". I called AT&T on the 7th (today) and they have no knowledge of this action being implemented.

People who plan to use it on a system other than AT&T. Or people that have an older sim (less expensive plan than what AT&T insists iphone owners pay).

"This is excellent news for the many U.S. customers with locked iPhones. Perhaps emails like this to Tim Cook prompted the change in policy." Or the proliferation of antitrust suits against apple and their business partners.
